Canonical Tag Checker

Fetch a live URL and report its rel=canonical tag, whether it is self-referencing, and any conflicts

Comprehensive Guide & Technical Mechanics

About Canonical Tag Checker — Free Online Tool

Canonical Tag Checker fetches a live page and reports what its rel=canonical actually says — whether it is present, absolute, self-referencing, and in agreement with the HTTP Link header.

Two sources are read and compared, the link element in the HTML and the Link header on the response, because a page can carry different values in each and a disagreement between them is itself the finding. The faults this surfaces are the quiet ones: a canonical still pointing at a staging or localhost host after a deploy, two canonical tags on one page, which Google treats as none at all, a relative href resolving against an unexpected base, and a canonical whose target then redirects somewhere else. Only the served HTML is read, so a canonical injected by JavaScript will not appear here — and Google may well miss it on the first pass too.

A browser cannot read another domain's HTML; the same-origin policy forbids it, which is exactly why this check runs on ShortTrick's server instead of in your tab. Your URL is posted to our inspect route, our server requests the page as ShortTrickSEOInspector/1.0 with none of your cookies attached, and the HTML is parsed and dropped.

Verifying a page canonicalises to itself after a deploy, checking whether a staging canonical escaped to production, confirming a syndicated copy points back at the original, and investigating a page that fell out of the index with no error anywhere.

When to use it

Canonical mistakes are quiet and expensive. A canonical pointing at the wrong page, at a staging domain, or at a URL that redirects will drop the page out of the index without any error appearing anywhere. Checking the rendered output is the only way to see what search engines see.

How it works

The page is fetched server-side, because a browser cannot read another site’s HTML — the same-origin policy blocks it. The HTML is parsed for link rel="canonical", the HTTP Link header is read, and both are compared against the URL you entered.

Self-referencing is usually what you want

On a normal, indexable page the canonical should point at that page’s own clean URL. Pointing it elsewhere tells Google to index the other page instead, which is right for a duplicate and wrong for anything else.

Common failures this surfaces

A canonical left pointing at a staging or localhost domain after a deploy. A relative canonical that resolves differently than intended. Two canonical tags on one page, which Google treats as none. A canonical that points at a URL which then redirects somewhere else.

Canonical is a hint, not an instruction

Google treats rel=canonical as one signal among several and can pick a different URL if the page’s internal links, sitemap entries and redirects point elsewhere. Consistency across all of those is what actually decides it.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

How to Use Canonical Tag Checker in 4 Easy Steps

Follow this simple guide to process your files in seconds directly inside your browser tab.

01

Enter Target Input for Canonical Tag Checker

Provide your target URL, content, or metadata into Canonical Tag Checker. A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the authoritative version of a page when several URLs serve similar content. This tool fetches a live page and reports what its canonical actually says.

Set Optimization Parameters

Configure inspection criteria, device viewports, or crawler standards. Canonical mistakes are quiet and expensive. A canonical pointing at the wrong page, at a staging domain, or at a URL that redirects will drop the page out of the index without any error appearing anywhere. Checking the rendered output is the only way to see what search engines see.
