How to Compress a PNG and When to Use JPG Instead
Colour reduction is what shrinks a PNG. For photographs, the wrong format is the real problem.
About Compress PNG — Free Online Tool
Compress PNG re-writes a PNG smaller, with three settings to pick from: Recommended, Extreme and Lossless. If the re-encode comes out no smaller than the file you started with, you get your original back rather than something bigger.
The two lossy settings round every red, green and blue value onto a coarser ladder — 32 steps per channel on Recommended, 16 on Extreme — which lengthens the runs that PNG's DEFLATE stage then compresses. Fully transparent pixels are skipped, so the alpha channel comes through untouched. Lossless changes no pixel value at all and only re-writes the stream, which is why it saves very little. Flat logos and screenshots gain the most; smooth gradients can band.
Quantising and re-encoding both happen on a canvas in your own tab, so the PNG never leaves your machine.
Slimming UI assets and icon sets before a deploy, reducing a logo exported at full 24-bit depth, cutting documentation screenshots down, and saving bytes where transparency rules out switching to JPEG.

When to use it
Uncompressed PNG images can be heavy, slowing down web pages and mobile applications. A smaller PNG cuts bandwidth and load time — at the cost of some colour depth, so keep your original if the exact pixel values matter.
How it works
Everything happens on a canvas in your tab. Every red, green and blue value is rounded onto a ladder of 32 steps per channel, which lengthens the repeated runs that PNG's DEFLATE stage then squeezes, and the shortened stream is written back out as a PNG. Fully transparent pixels are skipped, so the alpha channel comes through untouched.
Rounding Colours, Not Building A Palette
Rounding colour values is what makes this save anything: fewer distinct colours means longer runs for DEFLATE to pack. The result is still a truecolour PNG rather than an indexed-palette one, so the saving depends on how flat your image is. Logos and screenshots do well; smooth gradients can band. If the re-encode comes out no smaller, your original file is handed back instead of something bigger.
Preserves Alpha Transparency
Full alpha transparency is completely retained, making this tool perfect for logos, transparent icons, UI components, and product photos.
