The video side is a timestamp rewrite: each frame's presentation time is divided by the speed factor, so no new frames are invented. That matters most for slow motion — at 0.25x you get the same frames held four times as long, not interpolated frames in between, so motion looks stepped unless the source was shot at a high frame rate to begin with. Audio is run through a chain of atempo filters built by repeated halving or doubling, because that filter is only valid between 0.5x and 2x, and chaining it this way is what keeps a voice from turning into a chipmunk at the extremes. Asking for 1x is refused.
