Comprehensive Guide & Technical Mechanics

About JWT Token Generator — Free Online Tool

JWT Token Generator signs a JSON Web Token from a payload and a secret you supply, for testing against an API of your own.

The header and claims are Base64url-encoded and signed with HMAC through the browser's Web Crypto API, at HS256, HS384 or HS512. An iat claim is always added, and an exp claim is added from the expiry you set unless your payload already carries one. A secret shorter than eight characters is refused as trivially brute-forced. Only symmetric signing is offered — there is no RS256 or ES256 here, so a token meant for a service that verifies with a public key cannot be produced on this page.

Signing happens in the page, so the secret and the claims never leave your device and neither is stored. Web Crypto is only exposed by browsers on a secure page, which is why the tool needs HTTPS to work at all.

Producing a bearer token for a local API test, reproducing an expired-token case in a test suite, checking how your middleware reacts to an unexpected claim, and filling the Authorization header in a request client.

Also known as: generate jwt · create test jwt token · sign jwt hs256

When to use it

Generate mock authorization tokens for local API testing, unit tests, and Postman API requests.

How it works

Computes HMAC-SHA256 signature using Web Crypto subtle crypto API over header.payload.

Configurable Claims

Easily set sub (subject), role, exp (expiration duration), and custom JSON keys.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

How to Use JWT Token Generator in 4 Easy Steps

Follow this simple guide to process your files in seconds directly inside your browser tab.

01

Provide Input for JWT Token Generator

Paste your payload, code snippet, or string into the JWT Token Generator editor workspace. Encodes JSON headers and claims into Base64Url and calculates an HMAC cryptographic signature.

02

Configure Formatting & Validation Rules

Select indentation preferences, minification, encoding options, or validation rules. Generate mock authorization tokens for local API testing, unit tests, and Postman API requests.

03

Run In-Browser Engine

The engine executes JWT Token Generator locally in your browser with microsecond latency and zero server transmission.

04

Copy or Download Output

Copy the sanitized, formatted, or generated output directly to your clipboard or download it for your project.
