Comprehensive Guide & Technical Mechanics

About URL Encoder — Free Online Tool

URL Encoder percent-encodes text so it can travel safely in a URL or a query string — spaces become %20, and the characters that have a job in a URL stop breaking it.

Reserved characters are replaced by a percent sign and their hexadecimal byte value. These are the ones that otherwise end your parameter early: an ampersand starts the next one, a question mark starts the query, a hash starts the fragment. Non-ASCII text is encoded as its UTF-8 bytes, which is why a single accented character can become several percent-escapes.

The encoding runs in the page; the text is not sent anywhere.

Building a query string by hand, fixing a link that breaks at the first space, passing a URL as a parameter inside another URL, and debugging why a redirect loses part of its value.

When to use it

Prevent broken URLs when passing spaces, ampersands (&), question marks (?), or slashes in query parameters.

How it works

Converts reserved characters into % followed by their two-digit hexadecimal ASCII representation.

encodeURI vs encodeURIComponent

Choose component encoding for query parameters, or full URI encoding to preserve http:// slashes.
