Color Picker & Converter

Convert between HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK, with tints, shades and WCAG contrast ratios

Comprehensive Guide & Technical Mechanics

About Color Picker & Converter — Free Online Tool

Color Picker converts one colour between HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK, and builds out nine tints and nine shades of it along with its complement, its triad and its two analogous neighbours.

The contrast figures are the real WCAG 2.2 calculation rather than an approximation: each sRGB channel is linearised, weighted 0.2126, 0.7152 and 0.0722, and the two luminances compared as (L1 + 0.05) divided by (L2 + 0.05). You get the ratio against both white and black with the pass or fail verdict, and a plain warning when a colour clears 4.5:1 against neither and so is unsafe for body text on either background. The CMYK numbers are a different matter — straightforward arithmetic with no colour profile applied — so treat them as a starting point and let a print shop convert against US Web Coated or FOGRA for an exact match.

This tool takes no file and makes no request; the arithmetic runs in the page.

Checking whether a brand colour is legible as body text before committing to it, generating a tint and shade ramp for a design system, finding a complementary accent, and getting CMYK starting values for a print job.

When to use it

Design tools, CSS, print specifications and brand guidelines all describe colour differently, and a hand conversion is easy to get subtly wrong. Having the WCAG contrast ratio alongside the conversion also tells you, before you ship, whether text in that colour is legible.

How it works

The input is parsed and converted to RGB, then to each other model with the standard formulae. Contrast uses the WCAG 2.2 definition: each sRGB channel is linearised, weighted 0.2126 / 0.7152 / 0.0722 into a relative luminance, and the two luminances compared as (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05).

HSL and HSV are not the same thing

Both start from a hue angle, but HSL’s lightness runs from black through the pure hue at 50% to white, while HSV’s value runs from black to the pure hue at 100%. A colour picked in a design tool using HSV will not match the same numbers typed into CSS hsl().

What the contrast numbers mean

WCAG asks for 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text (18.66px bold or 24px regular) and for the boundaries of interface components. A ratio below 3:1 fails everywhere, which is why a mid-tone brand colour often cannot be used for text on either a white or a dark background.

CMYK without a profile is an approximation

The CMYK figures here come from the straightforward arithmetic conversion, with no ICC profile applied. Real print conversion depends on the press, paper and ink set, so treat these numbers as a starting point and let your printer do the profile-aware conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions About Color Picker & Converter

Common questions regarding Color Picker & Converter, data privacy, file format compatibility, and usage limits.

Mid-tone colours sit too far from both extremes. That is normal and it is not a bug in the colour — use it as a background, a border or a large heading, and take a tint or shade from the ramp for the text itself.
