Comprehensive Guide & Technical Mechanics

About Sharpen Image — Free Online Tool

Sharpen Image raises the contrast along edges so a slightly soft photo reads crisper, using either an unsharp mask or a 3x3 convolution kernel.

The unsharp mask, which is the default, blurs a copy of the image, subtracts it to isolate the edges, and adds that difference back at the strength you set; its threshold leaves low-contrast areas alone so smooth sky and skin do not turn grainy. The 3x3 kernel is the blunter instrument — one fixed neighbourhood weighting applied everywhere, with no threshold at all. Neither adds detail the sensor never recorded. Past a strength of roughly 1.5 either one starts laying bright halos along high-contrast edges, and those are baked in.

The convolution happens in the page and the photograph is not sent to a server.

Recovering a little bite in a shot that came out marginally soft, crisping a scanned document before reading it, countering the softness a downscale leaves behind, and bringing out texture in a product photo.

When to use it

Counteracts optical softness from smartphone camera lenses or downsampling.

How it works

Applies unsharp masking or Laplacian kernel matrix filters to boost boundary gradient deltas.

Avoiding Halos

Keep sharpen threshold balanced to prevent over-sharpening halo rings.
