The total is the string length as the browser stores it, in UTF-16 units, so a plain letter counts as one but an emoji or a rarer symbol counts as two. The space-free figure strips every whitespace character rather than just the space bar, which is why indented or multi-line text loses more than you might expect. There is no per-platform countdown gauge here — the figure is a number you compare against whatever cap you have in mind, shown beside the word, sentence and longest-word counts for the same text.
