Volume Converter

Convert liquids and volumes between liters, milliliters, US gallons, fluid ounces, cups, and cubic meters

Comprehensive Guide & Technical Mechanics

About Volume Converter — Free Online Converter

Volume Converter covers twenty-two capacity units, from millilitres and cubic metres through both the US and the imperial gallon, pint and fluid ounce, to teaspoons, tablespoons, cups and the 42-gallon oil barrel.

Litres are the pivot, US liquid measure is the default, and every imperial unit is labelled (UK) in the dropdown so the two systems are never silently mixed — the gallons differ by a fifth, 3.785411784 L against 4.54609 L. The cup offered here is the US legal cup of exactly 240 mL, the one nutrition labels use, and a note saying so appears with the result because the US customary cup of 236.588 mL is a different measure. What is deliberately absent is US dry measure: a dry pint or dry quart is a larger volume than its liquid namesake, and pushing a dry figure through this liquid table would give a wrong answer.

The capacity you enter is handled entirely by the browser: no upload, no account, and no copy of the figure anywhere once you close the page.

Scaling a recipe written in cups for a metric jug, working out whether a pint in a recipe means 568 mL or 473 mL, converting a tank rating from cubic feet to litres, and turning a crude-oil barrel figure into litres for a cost calculation.

When to use it

Translate culinary recipes between metric and US customary units, or calculate fuel tank capacities.

How it works

Converts the figure into litres, the base of the table, before writing it out in the unit you chose.

US vs Imperial Gallons

1 US gallon = 3.785 liters; 1 UK Imperial gallon = 4.546 liters.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions About Volume Converter

Common questions regarding Volume Converter, data privacy, file format compatibility, and usage limits.

The cup on this page is the US legal cup of exactly 240 mL, the one nutrition labels are written against. A US customary cup is 236.588 mL and a metric cup 250 mL, so a recipe using either of those will not match the figure here.
